Family Portraits — Let’s Be Real
The first question I always get: “What should we wear?” Here’s the lowdown:
Family portrait sessions can be a bit stressful, especially if you’ve got little ones or a big group. Trust me, as someone with four adult children, three grandkids, and a career as a professional photographer, I’ve seen it all. But don’t worry—I’m here to share my knowledge and help you prepare for a smooth, enjoyable session that results in beautiful photos you’ll love.
What to Wear?
- Coordinate, Don’t Match: Gone are the days of matching outfits. Instead, choose a color palette that works well together. If you’re planning to display these portraits at home, consider your home’s color scheme. If your living room is decorated in warm, earthy tones, you might want to avoid colors like teal and purple.
- Start with Your Outfit: Pick something you feel amazing in. Your confidence will shine through in the photos. Once you’ve chosen your outfit, build everyone else’s looks around it, using complementary colors and styles. For example, if you’re wearing a floral dress with pinks, purples, and greens, you could have one child in a green shirt and another in pink, while your partner wears a combination of those colors.
- Accessorize Thoughtfully: Accessories like belts, necklaces, bow ties, and hats can add that finishing touch. Avoid anything too trendy that might date the photos—think timeless and classic.
Preparing for the Shoot
Preparation is key to a successful session. Here’s how to get ready:
- Hair and Makeup: Consider hiring a professional for hair and makeup. It can be a relaxing experience and ensures you’ll look your best. If you’re doing it yourself, go for a subtle, natural look. Don’t forget to use hairspray if you’re curling your hair, and bring along touch-up items like lipstick and a brush.
- Get Plenty of Rest: A good night’s sleep is essential, especially for the little ones. Well-rested kids are happier and more cooperative.
- Pack Essentials: If you’ve got young kids, bring along non-messy snacks, a favorite toy, or comfort item. It can make all the difference in keeping them happy and engaged.
- Arrive Early: Aim to arrive a few minutes early so you can settle in and everyone can relax before we start shooting.
Grooming Tips
- Men: A fresh haircut a couple of days before the shoot is ideal. If you shave, do it the morning of the shoot with a new razor to avoid irritation.
- Ladies: Keep your skin moisturized in the days leading up to the shoot, and make sure your nails are tidy. Avoid high-salt foods to reduce bloating, and check your undergarments with your outfit to ensure no straps or lines are visible.
Confidence is Key
The most important thing you can bring to your session is confidence. Remember, it’s perfectly normal to feel a little awkward in front of the camera. My job is to help you feel comfortable and guide you through poses so that you look your best.
Should You Bring Props?
Props can add a fun and personal touch to your photos. Whether it’s something as simple as a favorite blanket or something more creative like brightly colored balloons or umbrellas, props can make your session unique to you. If you’re not sure what to bring, think about what makes your family special.
Final Touches
- Teeth: If you want to whiten your smile, start treatments about 2-3 weeks before your session.
- Sunburns and Tan Lines: Avoid them! If you tan, do so at least a week before the shoot.
- Ironing: Iron your clothes the night before and hang them to avoid wrinkles.
After the Shoot
Once we’ve wrapped up the session, you can relax and look forward to seeing your beautifully edited photos. I’ll keep you updated on when they’ll be ready. In the meantime, treat yourself to something special—you’ve earned it!
I can’t wait to capture these moments for you! Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the experience. See you at the shoot!

Hey friends! I’m thrilled to share my recent personal brand photography session with the fabulous Michelle Ousset.
As a personal brand photographer based in San Jose, I love helping amazing people in and around the Bay Area in Northern California like Michelle showcase their unique personalities and brands through stunning visuals.
Meet Michelle Ousset: A Bay Area Creative Powerhouse
Michelle Ousset is a dynamic and inspiring creative professional here in the Bay Area. It was an absolute joy to capture her vibrant personality, and soulful and professional essence through my lens.
The Planning: Crafting a Visual Story
Before the session, Michelle and I had an in-depth discussion about her brand, her goals, and the message she wanted to convey through her photos.
This planning phase is crucial as it ensures that every shot is intentional and aligned with her brand’s identity. She was amazing at picking out the outfits and props (perfection) that would best represent her.
The Photography Session: A Day of Fun and Creativity
On the day of the shoot, the energy was high, and we were ready to create magic. We chose a variety of background looks that resonated with Michelle’s brand.
Whether it was at the desk for her coaching sessions, on the couch with her camera, backlit shear curtains blowing bubbles, or simply leaning against a white wall in her lavender outfit – she was completely herself.
Capturing the Essence: The Art of Personal Brand Photography
During the session, my goal was to make Michelle feel comfortable and confident. We laughed, posed, and captured candid moments that truly reflected her personality.
The key to great personal brand photography is authenticity, and that’s exactly what we achieved. Each photo tells a part of Michelle’s story, from her professional endeavors to her creative passions.
The Results: Stunning Visuals That Speak for Themselves
The final photos turned out beautifully, perfectly encapsulating Michelle’s brand. Whether she’s using them for her website, social media, or marketing materials, these images are a powerful tool for connecting with her audience.
The vibrant colors, genuine expressions, and thoughtful compositions make each photo a standout.

In today’s visually-driven world, professional brand photography is more important than ever.

Branding, MERGE
Hey there, gorgeous souls! Jen Vazquez, your resident hype-woman, here to whisper sweet nothings (and actionable tips) into your ear about brand photography.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Cameras? Ugh, the horror!” or “Maybe after I shed those last five pounds…” But hold your horses, because I’m here to tell you that brand photography is your secret weapon, not your kryptonite.
Think of it like this: you’ve built this incredible business, a masterpiece of passion and hustle. But without stunning visuals, it’s like hiding your Mona Lisa behind a dusty curtain. Brand photography is the spotlight that illuminates your brilliance and makes the world take notice.
And yes, even if the camera makes you want to crawl under the rug, or you’re rocking a “work in progress” body, here’s why you should still rock that photoshoot:
1. It’s not about perfection, it’s about connection. We’re all human, with quirks and imperfections that make us unique. Authenticity is what resonates with people, not airbrushed facades. So embrace your realness, and let your photos tell the story of your amazing self.
2. Confidence is contagious. Stepping outside your comfort zone and rocking that photoshoot is a power move. It shows you believe in yourself and your brand, and that confidence radiates through the lens. Trust me, people will feel it, and be drawn to it.
3. You deserve to feel fabulous. Professional photographers are magicians with light and angles. They’ll make you look your absolute best, highlighting your strengths and minimizing your “meh” bits (we all have them!). So get ready to be pampered, empowered, and showered with compliments.
Plus, here are some bonus tips for camera-shy beauties:
- Find a photographer you vibe with. Someone who gets your personality and makes you feel comfortable.
- Focus on the fun, not the flaws. Dance, laugh, tell stories – make it an experience, not an ordeal.
- Wear what makes you feel amazing. Confidence is the best accessory, so rock that outfit that makes you strut like a boss.
Remember, your brand is an extension of you. And you, my dear, are a masterpiece, ready to shine in all your glory. So ditch the doubts, embrace the magic of brand photography, and watch your business soar to new heights!
P.S. Need a partner in crime to capture your brand magic? Hit me up! Let’s cook up some visual masterpieces that’ll leave you saying “Damn, I look good!” and the competition saying “Where did she get those photos?”
Go forth and slay, gorgeous souls!
