Top Color Schemes and Styling Tips for Stunning Family Photos in the Bay Area
Hey there! As someone who’s been dressing our family (including grand babies) for our annual photos, I get how overwhelming it can be to choose the perfect colors. Let’s make this fun and simple with some awesome color scheme ideas!
One thing that has been easier for me to do when get outfits for my family. I find it easier for you to find an outfit that you feel beautiful in and/or a favorite outfit that you’ve gotten compliments on. Then use the advice below to color-coordinate the rest of the family.
Coordinating Family Outfits for Picture-Perfect Photos
Choose a Palette: Select 2-3 colors to create a cohesive look without matching exactly. Think of a clothing catalog where everyone’s outfits coordinate seamlessly without any one person standing out too much.
Solid Colors with a Touch of Pattern: Solid colors typically photograph best, but incorporating a light pattern on one or two people adds visual interest and variety.
Plan Ahead: Lay out all the outfits on the floor or bed a few days before your session to see how they look together. This ensures everyone’s coordinated and avoids last-minute stress.
Use Layers and Accessories: Hats, scarves, leggings, jackets, and jewelry add depth and texture to your photos, making them more visually appealing and stylish.
What Colors to Avoid (Mostly)
Don’t take this as a hard rule—think of it more as a friendly guideline. These colors typically don’t look great for an entire outfit:
- Black: It tends to dull the image and hide details. A little black is fine, but avoid large black outfits.
- Dark Blue: Similar to black, it can be too dark. Small amounts are okay, and jeans don’t count.
- Neon: Way too bright! It draws too much attention and can reflect weird colors onto skin.
- Bright White: Often looks blue in photos and can wash out skin tones. Go for off-white or cream instead.
- Bright Red: Hard to photograph and can cast colors onto skin. Dark reds are much better.
- Bright Blue: It can look unnatural in nature shots and cools down the image too much. Use sparingly.
Understanding the Color Wheel
If you’re into learning why certain colors look great together, here’s a quick look at the color wheel. You can use complementary colors (opposites on the wheel), triads (three colors forming a triangle), or analogous colors (next to each other) to create harmonious looks. Muted versions of these colors work best.
Color Relationships to Choose What to Wear
- Complementary Colors: Opposites on the color wheel. For example, olive green and maroon.
- Triad Colors: Three colors form a triangle. For instance, turquoise, yellow-orange, and pink.
- Square & Tetradic: Four colors forming a square or rectangle. Use muted versions or patterns to balance.
- Analogous Colors: Three colors next to each other. Think red-orange, orange, and yellow-orange.
- Monochromatic: Different shades of the same color. Dark green dress for mom, light green romper for baby.
Neutral Colors Are Your Friend
Neutral colors are super easy to work with and go with almost anything. Think off-white, gray, cream, taupe, etc. They’re a safe bet and can be paired with a pop of color for some fun!
Examples and Inspiration
Check out some of these examples for ideas:
- All neutrals: Looks great and can’t go wrong.
- Neutrals with a pop of color: Adds a bit of fun without going overboard.
