Top Color Schemes and Styling Tips for Stunning Family Photos in the Bay Area

Hey there! As someone who’s been dressing our family (including grand babies) for our annual photos, I get how overwhelming it can be to choose the perfect colors. Let’s make this fun and simple with some awesome color scheme ideas!

One thing that has been easier for me to do when get outfits for my family. I find it easier for you to find an outfit that you feel beautiful in and/or a favorite outfit that you’ve gotten compliments on. Then use the advice below to color-coordinate the rest of the family.

Coordinating Family Outfits for Picture-Perfect Photos

Choose a Palette: Select 2-3 colors to create a cohesive look without matching exactly. Think of a clothing catalog where everyone’s outfits coordinate seamlessly without any one person standing out too much.

Solid Colors with a Touch of Pattern: Solid colors typically photograph best, but incorporating a light pattern on one or two people adds visual interest and variety.

Plan Ahead: Lay out all the outfits on the floor or bed a few days before your session to see how they look together. This ensures everyone’s coordinated and avoids last-minute stress.

Use Layers and Accessories: Hats, scarves, leggings, jackets, and jewelry add depth and texture to your photos, making them more visually appealing and stylish.

What Colors to Avoid (Mostly)

Don’t take this as a hard rule—think of it more as a friendly guideline. These colors typically don’t look great for an entire outfit:

  • Black: It tends to dull the image and hide details. A little black is fine, but avoid large black outfits.
  • Dark Blue: Similar to black, it can be too dark. Small amounts are okay, and jeans don’t count.
  • Neon: Way too bright! It draws too much attention and can reflect weird colors onto skin.
  • Bright White: Often looks blue in photos and can wash out skin tones. Go for off-white or cream instead.
  • Bright Red: Hard to photograph and can cast colors onto skin. Dark reds are much better.
  • Bright Blue: It can look unnatural in nature shots and cools down the image too much. Use sparingly.

Understanding the Color Wheel

If you’re into learning why certain colors look great together, here’s a quick look at the color wheel. You can use complementary colors (opposites on the wheel), triads (three colors forming a triangle), or analogous colors (next to each other) to create harmonious looks. Muted versions of these colors work best.

color wheel for family photos and picking outfits.

Color Relationships to Choose What to Wear

  • Complementary Colors: Opposites on the color wheel. For example, olive green and maroon.
  • Triad Colors: Three colors form a triangle. For instance, turquoise, yellow-orange, and pink.
  • Square & Tetradic: Four colors forming a square or rectangle. Use muted versions or patterns to balance.
  • Analogous Colors: Three colors next to each other. Think red-orange, orange, and yellow-orange.
  • Monochromatic: Different shades of the same color. Dark green dress for mom, light green romper for baby.

Neutral Colors Are Your Friend

Neutral colors are super easy to work with and go with almost anything. Think off-white, gray, cream, taupe, etc. They’re a safe bet and can be paired with a pop of color for some fun!

Examples and Inspiration

Check out some of these examples for ideas:

  • All neutrals: Looks great and can’t go wrong.
  • Neutrals with a pop of color: Adds a bit of fun without going overboard.
  • Balanced bold and neutral colors: A bit of both for a vibrant yet harmonious look.

Bay Area Brand Photos with Michelle Ousset (Coach + Birth Photographer

Hey friends! I’m thrilled to share my recent personal brand photography session with the fabulous Michelle Ousset.

As a personal brand photographer based in San Jose, I love helping amazing people in and around the Bay Area in Northern California like Michelle showcase their unique personalities and brands through stunning visuals.

Meet Michelle Ousset: A Bay Area Creative Powerhouse

Michelle Ousset is a dynamic and inspiring creative professional here in the Bay Area. It was an absolute joy to capture her vibrant personality, and soulful and professional essence through my lens.

The Planning: Crafting a Visual Story

Before the session, Michelle and I had an in-depth discussion about her brand, her goals, and the message she wanted to convey through her photos.

This planning phase is crucial as it ensures that every shot is intentional and aligned with her brand’s identity. She was amazing at picking out the outfits and props (perfection) that would best represent her.

The Photography Session: A Day of Fun and Creativity

On the day of the shoot, the energy was high, and we were ready to create magic. We chose a variety of background looks that resonated with Michelle’s brand.

Whether it was at the desk for her coaching sessions, on the couch with her camera, backlit shear curtains blowing bubbles, or simply leaning against a white wall in her lavender outfit – she was completely herself.

Capturing the Essence: The Art of Personal Brand Photography

During the session, my goal was to make Michelle feel comfortable and confident. We laughed, posed, and captured candid moments that truly reflected her personality.

The key to great personal brand photography is authenticity, and that’s exactly what we achieved. Each photo tells a part of Michelle’s story, from her professional endeavors to her creative passions.

The Results: Stunning Visuals That Speak for Themselves

The final photos turned out beautifully, perfectly encapsulating Michelle’s brand. Whether she’s using them for her website, social media, or marketing materials, these images are a powerful tool for connecting with her audience.

The vibrant colors, genuine expressions, and thoughtful compositions make each photo a standout.

Why Personal Brand Photography Is Essential

In today’s visually-driven world, professional brand photography is more important than ever.

It’s not just about looking good; it’s about telling your story, building trust, and making a lasting impression. With my expertise, I help clients like Michelle create a cohesive visual identity that resonates with their target audience.

Work With Me: Let’s Elevate Your Brand Together

Finding the Perfect Photo Partner: 5 Questions for Your Brand Photographer

So, you’re ready to take your brand photos to the next level, but with all the photographers out there, picking the right one can feel like finding a unicorn. Not to worry, we’ve got you covered! Here are 5 key questions to ask that will ensure you find the perfect photo partner for your brand:

1. Brand Whisperer? (Do you have experience photographing brands or products?)

This might seem obvious, but trust us, it’s crucial. Brand photography is different than, say, capturing your kid’s soccer game. You need someone who can speak the language of brands and translate your vision into stunning photos.

2. Planning Party? (How will you prepare for my brand session?)

Great brand photos don’t happen by accident. Ask your photographer about their planning process. Do they create mood boards with you? Scout locations? The more prepared they are, the smoother your shoot will be.

3. Sun Seeker or Studio Guru? (Do you shoot natural light or in the studio?)

Think about the vibe you want for your brand photos. Sunshine and action shots? Cozy studio setup? Knowing your photographer’s lighting preference will help you find the perfect match for your brand’s aesthetic.

4. Unveiling the Goods! (How will I receive my images?)

How will you get your hands on those amazing photos? Some photographers deliver a curated selection, while others give you access to everything. Find out their process beforehand to avoid any surprises.

5. Image Rights Rundown (What image rights do I receive?)

This might sound fancy, but it’s important. Basically, it boils down to where you can use the photos. Website and social media? Billboards and national campaigns? Knowing the image rights you get will ensure you can use your photos exactly how you need to.

By asking these questions, you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect photographer to capture the essence of your brand. Now get out there and start snapping some magic!

Do you need brand photos?

If you are located in Northern California (The Bay Area), or are willing to travel her, I’d love to get my camera on you!  Let’s chat!

Tired of Blending In? Upgrade Your Visuals for Business Success

Tired of the endless social media grind with minimal results. Hey, I get it – building a business you love is amazing…and a lot of work! I’m Jen of Jen Vazquez Media, a photographer, videographer, and your not-so-secret marketing weapon located in the Bay Area, California. I help passionate people like you with one of the overlooked marketing essentials – killer visuals.

We both know building a business is the best kind of rollercoaster, but let’s be real – are your photos and videos showing off that awesome energy? If you’re ready to ditch those stock photos and start attracting clients who get your vibe, let’s chat!

First Impressions Are Everything

Set the Stage

The attention span of your potential clients is shorter than a goldfish’s. You’ve got seconds to make an impact, and your visuals are doing the heavy lifting before anyone reads a single word.

Generic = Forgettable

We’re bombarded with images every day. If yours look like everyone else’s, you’re blending into the background noise. Stock photos are the enemy of standing out!

Emotion is Key

Good brand photos and videos evoke a feeling – excitement, trust, a sense of fun. They give a potential client a taste test of what it’s like to work with you.

Actionable Tip

Time for an audit! Scroll through your website or social accounts. Be honest – do the images make YOU stop and want to learn more? If not, it’s time to invest in something better.

It’s Not Just About Pretty Pictures

Your Story, Visually

Sure, we all want those polished shots, but your brand is MORE than a headshot. Great visuals tell the story of why you do what you do. They should show your passion, your values, the unique way you serve clients.

Skip the Sales Pitch

People hate being sold to, but they love connecting with people. Brand imagery that feels genuine creates that connection way faster than an endless string of sales-y captions.

Show Your Magic

What makes working with you different? Showcase that! Photos or videos of your workspace, your creative process, or even happy client interactions reveal the real experience people are buying into.

Actionable Tip

Brainstorm a list of 5 things that make you stand out. Is it your fun personality, your attention to detail? Then, get creative about how to SHOW those things visually!

Videos Take Engagement Further

Video is NOT Optional

If you’re not doing video yet, you’re behind the curve. It’s the most popular content format out there – the stats don’t lie!

It’s About Connection

Video makes people feel like they know you. It builds trust way faster than a bio or snappy caption ever could.

Don’t Overthink It

Start with short, simple videos. Share tips related to your expertise, show a bit of your process – keep it real! Your phone is a powerful tool.

Shareability is Key

Videos get more likes, comments, and shares than static posts. That means new eyeballs on your business, without you putting in extra work.

Actionable Tip

Brainstorm 3 quick topics you’re comfortable talking about on camera. Commit to recording just ONE this week, even if it’s only a minute long. Get in the habit!

Level Up with Consistency

Great Content is Useless if No One Sees It

You could have the most amazing photos and videos ever…but if they sit on your hard drive, they’re not helping you.
Consistency is key to staying on people’s radar.

Visuals are Part of Your Brand Language

Just like you choose specific fonts or colors, the style of your photos/videos helps people instantly recognize YOU. Being consistent reinforces that recognition.

Planning Saves Sanity

Don’t freak out, it doesn’t have to be complicated! Even a simple spreadsheet where you plug in what type of visual goes out on which day makes a huge difference.

Repurpose, Repurpose, Repurpose

Took a great photo? Turn it into multiple social posts, bits for your email newsletter, etc. Get everything you can out of your investment.

Actionable Tip

Pick one Search Marketing Platform (Googe-blog, Youtube, or Pinterest) and one Social Media Marketing Platform (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or Linked) to get the best growth for your time-buck.

Bottom Line

Ready to stand out and grow your business? Upgrade your visuals with custom photos and videos – it’s a game-changer.

If you’re in the Northern California, let’s chat as I’d love to capture your visuals with an eye toward marketing strategy to help you grow your business.

If you aren outside of the Bay Area, California, I do travel!

Demystifying the Cost of Lifestyle Brand Photography: A Wise Investment (That’s Worth Every Sparkle!)

In this sparkly world of visual storytelling, stunning images are your brand’s BFF. Lifestyle brand photography + videography is the magic that captures your brand’s essence in those oh-so-shareable visuals.

But, like all good things, it comes with a price tag. Let’s break down why lifestyle brand photography costs what it does and why it’s the investment your brand deserves (think: confetti cannons of success!).

Professional Expertise (It’s Like Having a Photography Fairy Godmother)

Imagine your photographer as your personal photography fairy godmother. They have years of experience, magical skills, and know all the secrets of amazing visual storytelling. They understand lighting, composition, editing…all the things that make your brand pop! This level of expertise is what makes your photos shine brighter than a disco ball.

Equipment and Gear (Think: Top-Notch Cameras)

Think of it like a super fancy photoshoot makeover! Professional photographers use top-of-the-line cameras, lenses, lighting…all the sparkly tools to capture your brand in its best light. Maintaining this gear is part of the magic, which is why it factors into the cost.

Location and Set Design (Your Brand’s Dream Photoshoot Location)
Here

Imagine your perfect photoshoot backdrop – is it a cozy cafe, a vibrant cityscape, or a beachy paradise? Finding (and sometimes renting) these dream locations, plus adding in props and styling, is key to crafting that “wow” factor. All this behind-the-scenes magic adds to the total cost.

Planning and Coordination (Like a Super Organized Photoshoot Party)

The best photoshoots are like well-planned parties! Photographers team up with creative directors, stylists, models, and makeup artists – it’s a whole crew to make your brand look amazing. The time and effort put into organizing this dream team is what delivers those incredible final shots.

Don’t let your competition steal the spotlight!

Post-Production (Adding That Extra Pinch of Sparkle!)

The magic continues even after the photoshoot ends! Post-production is where photos get retouched, color-corrected, and sprinkled with extra magic dust. This final touch ensures your photos are as flawless as your brand.

Licensing and Usage Rights (Get Ready to Share Your Photos Everywhere!)

When you invest in lifestyle brand photography, you’re also investing in the rights to use those fabulous photos everywhere! Think social media, website, ads, and maybe even a billboard (hello, superstar!). Different usage rights affect the pricing, ensuring your brand can shine anywhere it wants.

Return on Investment (ROI) – It’s Like Money Raining Down on Your Business

The most important thing about lifestyle brand photography is how much it can give back to your business! High-quality photos grab attention, drive traffic, and make people want to be part of your brand world. So while it might feel like a splurge today, think of it as investing in future success – confetti cannons and all!

Summary

Lifestyle brand photography is more than just pretty pictures – it’s a smart investment in your brand’s future. Understanding what goes into the pricing helps you make the best decision for your business. Remember, amazing visuals can take your brand from ‘nice’ to ‘OMG I need that!’ (and that’s the kind of magic we all want).
