Henry Cowell State Park Anniversary Shoot with Chocolate Labrador

I’m so excited to start with my 7 on 7 project.  Each month I, along with several talented photographers, will be sharing 7 photos on the 7 of each month.  This month, I am sharing photos from a visit to the woods with my daughter and her husband to celebrate her 3rd wedding anniversary.

We went to Henry Cowell State Park in Felton California. A tip for photographing in the woods: Because of the tall trees, you want to photograph more midday as later in the day, when it’s the best time to photograph (2 hours before sunset), it will be darker because of the tall trees.

They brought their chocolate labrador named Blue, and also my grand-puppy! He’s a tall field lab and has the sweetest disposition. While he looks imposing, he would actually lick a burglar and invite them to play with his “baby”, gently loved stuffed animal elephant.

The shoot reminded me of an engagement shoot because I wanted to capture the love they share for each other. You see, they were high school sweethearts. Falling in love at 15. When all of us said it was puppy love, my daughter and her husband knew they were meant for each other. They got married on their 10 year anniversary and amazinglyenough, they truly love each other more today than they did on their wedding day.

I’m such a proud parent at how mature their love is, filled with communication and vulnerability, while having so much fun together. It’s all a mom could wish for their child.

Hope you enjoy the images. Once you’re done, click on over to check out the always beautiful photos from my friend Kristina

6 Tips for Christmas Photos

holiday christmas photosBelow are 6 tips for taking Christmas Photos.  Where did the custom of sending Christmas cards start? Research shows it started in the UK in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole. He was a civil servant (Government worker) who was very interested in the new ‘Public Post Office’ and wondered how it could be used more by ordinary people.  I couldn’t find information on when photographs started to appear on Christmas cards but I recall them back in the 80’s.  Boy was that a horrible time for hair and clothes!

Being a photographer, they are my favorite kind of card, however the reason I love them is I can stay connected to friends and family and watch their children grow and change.   In this very electronic age, I feel that Christmas Photo Cards are more important than ever.

  1. Take your photographs for you Christmas cards between July and September.  The holidays are a busy time for photographers and doing it early ensures you have enough time to get edited images back, order the cards, receive the cards, address the envelopes, and mail.
  2. The best photographs are the ones that show your family doing something they love from playing at the beach to playing football at the park, or miniature golfing.  It’s more fun than a posed photograph and shows your friends and family what you enjoy.
  3. You don’t have to wear red and green but if you do, you want to coordinate, not be “matchy matchy”.   Coordinate the look so it’s cohesive.  You can choose a pattern shirt for your husband and you and your children can each wear a different color from that pattern.
  4. Mail your cards as early as possible, but not more than a week before Thanksgiving. You want your cards to arrive early in December. You took lovely photographs for this Christmas card so let your friends and family enjoy them for a while.Holiday-outfits
  5. Skip the labels and take the time to personally address the outside of the envelopes. This shows a personal touch and that you care.
  6. Include your return address on all cards. They will know immediately who sent it without opening the envelope and have your most current address.   .

Family Portrait for the Holidays with the Williams’ in Morgan Hill

family portrait in gilroy

I was thrilled to repay the kindness of Hailey from Archer Inspired Photography who photographed my family for me. She decided to photograph her little family at home, including their beloved pooch.  The Williams’ relocated this year from Bakersfield and wanted to share their home with their family through their holiday cards.

We also captured some images of in a field near by which was perfect. The love that these two parents have for each other and their son Archer is obvious and I was happy to capture that love.

Archer is 5 months old and when they moved here he was less than a month old.  This is essentially his first home and they  now have that and their love captured.  These images will be one of the first keepsakes that will be passed down from generation to generation.

Fun Alternatives for Displaying Your Photos

Fun Alternatives for Displaying Your Photos

Amazing photos deserve an equally amazing display.  You always have to use a traditional frame to showcase them in your home.  Below is some inspiration for deciding how to display your favorite memories.

Contemporary

If your home décor is very contemporary, then you might want to consider canvas gallery wraps, image blocks or standout mounts to showcase your photos. Going frameless is also a great option if you’re looking for something truly sleek and modern.

Rustic or Chic

If rustic and chic is more your style, then why not turn old pieces of wood into stained photo clipboards.  You can use binder clips to hang the photos against the wood. Another unique option is to hang your photos on a thin cable.  This will make it look like a clothesline. Binder clips also work perfectly for this. You can also get barn wood frames that look very rustic and would fit right in with your taste.

Creative Type

If you’re the creative type and have some extra time on your hands then there is the option of creating frames out of washi tape. This way you can incorporate different colors and designs around your photos to really make your walls pop.
