Three new features for Pinterest Marketing

Three new features for Pinterest Marketing by jen Vazquez Pinterest marketing strategist

MY SUMMARY OF PINTEREST'S "INSPIRE HOLIDAY SHOPPERS WITH PINTEREST" WEBINAR

The webinar was designed to give us an introduction to crafting the perfect holiday campaign for your brand as early as possible.

They reflected and noted that it’s been quite a start to the 2020s with going through unprecedented times of global pandemic, political unrest, as well as poor and mixed the sobering realities

Adults are spending 50% of their waking hours online. And more than ever, people are saying that being online makes them feel disconnected. From themselves and their interests. People feel sucked in, burned out, anxious from social comparison. Given the realities of a heavy news cycle, and negative messaging on many platforms, people often turn to Pinterest for a much-needed break from scrolling through not-so-good news.

Pinterest is viewed as a place to discover and be inspired. Pinterest wanted to learn why people turn to Pinterest and what specifically feels good about the platform?

What they found was that Pinterest is a different social media platform building a more positive place on the internet, where you can find things you actually love. Where creators can be known for expertise, non celebrity and where you can plan for an amazing holiday celebrating with your friends and family.

A recent study by Nielsen shows that Pinterest is the number one place people go for inspiration online and off.  So Pinterest decided to take a look at how to move people towards decisions on the platform.

They found on Pinterest that 97% of searches are unbranded people come to Pinterest to plan and do without even making up their mind about what to buy.

Pinterest drives 10x Higher branded searches off platform. That's a trigger moment that happens on Pinterest. Inspirational environments actually help people make up their mind. We call this decision making behavior, the NEW ROI a return on inspiration.

So how does this impact the way you should be thinking about the holidays this year?

2022 Holiday Research

Pinterest shared what they learned from 2022 holiday research that highlighted one important thing.  —- the holidays will be different this year. The holidays will be more expansive, more personalized and more dynamic than ever.  Because the past two years have forced people to reinvent the way they plan for and celebrate the holidays, they have expanded their definition of what the holidays mean.

People are looking for new ways to bring fresh joy to their traditions, and personalize their holiday plans to suit their needs. While all of this reinvention may have started as a necessity, it's now become the norm and people like it giving them permission to design plan and celebrate their holidays in the best way for them.

All of that means the need for holiday inspiration has never been greater. Pinterest shared a video of pinners and what they have to say about planning the holidays.  They shared things like:

Pinterest allows me to visualize ideas that I have in my head.”

“I have categories for Christmas baking, Christmas dinner ideas, Christmas party ideas, Christmas outfit ideas for those days where I'm going to events

Pinterest offers some more environmentally conscious and budget friendly opportunities to decorate your home for the holidays without actually breaking the bank.”

without Pinterest I also wouldn't have been able to do things like hold my annual friend Miss at my new place. And I think in a way it kind of helps me get a bigger view of what's possible for home decor. Secret Santa gifts and even holiday snacks and meals.”

Pinterest really inspires me to not only find great gift ideas and try new brands, but I also feel that I'm just becoming a better host go on there and I see something I'm like yes, it's exactly what I've been looking for.”

“I was inspired to get a Black Christmas tree and who would have thought it would look so kind of neutral, but yet something unique. And it's a way that I can also use it for Halloween so it's dual purpose and create a specific for each of my best friends and just start adding things to it whether

More Research

What pinners shared about Pinterest is that they are really excited to celebrate more holiday moments of all sizes like big moments and a lot more of the small moments. And they've already started planning many of those moments and celebrations on Pinterest, which means there are even more opportunities for you to reach them and boost your holiday sales.

Pinterest’s research shows that shoppers on Pinterest are optimistic about the 2022 holiday season. They're excited to get back out into the world and they look forward to the return of the larger and more traditional celebrations that they've always enjoyed. They also really like their newer traditions and the smaller mini moments they created over the past two years and they plan to keep them and they'll add even more.

82% say they expect to create and celebrate more smaller moments this holiday season

Pinterest’s research also validated that New traditions have taken hold of the past two years as the pandemic gave people permission to design and celebrate the holidays their own way – which people on Pinterest really embraced.  And it showed that pinners were 60% more likely to create a new holiday tradition with close friends and family which has cause an explosion of smaller unique holiday moments on Pinterest. And while the traditional holidays make the season memorable. It's these many small moments that make the season truly special.

Those smaller moments range from seasonal traditions like parties with friends or coworkers to tree decorating or holiday. There are culturally meaningful celebrations and important personal moments like a holiday engagement or baby gender reveal.

If you have services or products that can help people celebrate small as well as large and traditional celebrations, ensure you are marketing those on Pinterest.  Including Pinterest in your marketing is a no brainer and provides amazing return on your investment of time - far better than other social media platforms.

Pinterest helps you connect with customers in a hyper relevant way. It's also a great opportunity to expand on traditional audiences and lean into adjacent categories.

Pinterest is the number one destination when it comes to holiday inspiration. And inspiration is indeed the new influence. Holiday shoppers say that their top place for inspiration and motivation during the holidays is Pinterest. This translates into purchase influence. One in five holiday shoppers say the content on Pinterest inspired at least half of their holiday purchases last year. Yes that’s right!

Pinners Are Inspired

Pinterest inspired at least half of their purchases.  Pinners rely on Pinterest to find what's new or new to them.

Pinterest then went into a little more in depth on shoppers on Pinterest. First thing they mentioned is how Pinterst shoppers are different from shoppers than on other platforms.

They're always shopping. And what's really noticeable is that they spend more twice is more compared to other platforms. Basically they are super shoppers. Plus, they buy more each time they shop.

Shoppers on Pinterest had 85% larger baskets at checkout, which is a pretty incredible stat. And last but not least Pinterest is the most efficient channel overall for generating incremental conversions.  How efficient you might ask? Well 30% more so than other social platforms.

Pinterest heard from shoppers that Pinterest brings the best of offline shopping online, which is nearly twice as high as the number of people who use other social platforms.

What's really interesting is that a lot of early industry forecasts are predicting a return to brick and mortar shopping. 87% of shoppers who use Pinterest say it's a valuable compliment to in store shopping. And that's 85% higher than what people say about other platforms.

Personalization

Another area where Pinterest beats out the competition is personalization. Personalization matters more than anything when it comes to shopping.

When Pinterest looked at shopping data through the holiday lens, what they noticed about people on Pinterest is that not only do they love to shop but they also love to gift.  Turns out 90% Use it for gift-giving ideas

He’s a big note that not many people realize.  Research shows people on Pinterest start holiday shopping early. The majority of pinners start their holiday shopping including for gifting purposes before Thanksgiving.

More Shopper Data

Pinterest looked at the data we found that interest shoppers are pretty unique. They go to Pinterest to find gifts based on who they're shopping for. Notably, they are open minded about brands or products.

So for brands this is really the perfect opportunity to reach active gift shoppers while they're undecided. All this in mind, they’ve been working hard to create a wide range of surfaces that allow brands to reach pinners at different points of their shopping journey.

  • There’s the shop tab from search, helping Pinners to go right into shop mode as they search for ideas.
  • There is product tagging on standard pins (via the Pinterest app on cell phones) helping to make any pin instantly shopable content and move Pinterest inspiration to action.
  • Try-On, which gives Pinners the ability to virtually try on makeup such as lipstick and eyeshadow from the comfort of the couch.

Pinterest is also continuing to introduce new products with feedback from partners. Recent examples of a product that they just launched is shopping list. People are already saving ideas and products they love on Pinterest and we know that there are over seven times more likely to purchase products they've saved with shopping lists.

This allows Pinners to save product pins automatically in one place, making it easier for them to come back and shop the item.

And exciting news, there is the integration app for WooCommerce.

Pinterest shared how to create your media plan as you prepare for the holiday season. Something you should always remember is that pinners are planners, in fact pinners start planning shopping and buying early for the holiday. The holiday gifting searches on Pinterest start picking up between July and September.

So, you should start pinning products and services for the holiday season NOW!

Summary

To summarize,  by now you've heard loud and clear that the holidays will be different this year. There'll be more expansive, more personalized and more dynamic than ever, which means the need for holiday inspiration has never been greater.

And here are four takeaways:

  • People come to Pinterest open minded and they leave decided
  • Pinterest is 10 times more efficient at driving consideration.
  • In 2022 We'll have more holiday celebrations big and small which means there are more opportunities for you to reach shoppers on Pinterest and boost your holiday sales.
  • Pinners start planning their holidays early on Pinterest and they're buying gifts for everyone in their life. We've seen planning move into high gear and brands between July and September the last couple of years so start pinning now!

If you want to watch a video rather than read, scroll to the bottom

Pinterest is a powerful traffic tool that can help to drive traffic to your website. With over 400 million monthly active users, Pinterest is the third largest search engine, making it a great platform for driving traffic to your content. Pinterest is also an evergreen traffic source, which means that your content will continue to be relevant and drive traffic long after it is first published.

As a creative entrepreneur, Pinterest should be a key part of your marketing strategy, and I hope that this blog (and live video below) gives you a glimpse into how you can use Pinterest to drive traffic to your content.

Pinterest is a powerful tool that can help you showcase your content and reach your ideal client. Pinterest’s superpower is that it can showcase your content for months (not 24-72 hours like Instagram), driving your ideal client directly to you. Pinterest marketing is a great way to reach your target audience and promote your business.

By following these tips, you can start using Pinterest to reach more people and promote your business.

Alright, enough with that… Here’s those tips!

Pinterest is a great platform for content creators looking to showcase their work and get it in front of a large audience.

Whether you are a wedding pro, a coach, or other creative with a service-based business, Pinterest can be a powerful tool to help promote your content and grow your following.

By creating fresh pins on a regular basis, you can ensure that your Pinterest marketing is effective and that your pins stand out from the competition. The key is to be consistent – choose whatever number of pins you can realistically commit to posting on a regular basis, and stick to it. With a little effort, Pinterest can be a great way to reach new readers and viewers.

Create Idea Pins

These really resonate with people and Pinterest has been pushing them hard (and has been for a bit).  Idea pins get you more eyeballs in a short period of time.  Think reels.  Do 1 Idea pin a week (consider what your blog is about each week and create an idea pin).

You can create them by filming as you talk straight to camera or create graphic slides and upload those.  Be sure to not use logos or website addresses on the graphic, but you can share it in the notes section of the idea pin.

And… don’t take too much time to create.  Think of creating a reel – it used to take me about an hour to create one.  Now I create them in 15 minutes (that includes filming and adding text).  The same is true to Idea Pins.

The more you create them, the easier they get. And if you know me, you know that I LOVE repurposing so use that Idea pin as a reel.  Film on your cell and then upload to Pinterest save as a video and create a video pin with a link to that content.  Then upload to Instagram and TikTok if you want.

Boards

Repurpose or add new boards. Make sure that the boards are all in and around your business and what you sell.  One thing I’ve been doing lately that is working is to have three boards for each area you share in.

As an example, my Pinterest Management clients sell letterpress cards (they are gorgeous BTW Pretty Peptalks).  I created three boards for her advice on writing notes or cards.  One is Letterpress stationery tips, stationery writing tips, and stationery advice.

My research showed that those KEYWORDS were searched for and it gives me multiple boards to pin her advice on.  It also allows people to use those search terms to find the board as well as her pins.

Bottom Line: Repurpose old boards that aren’t getting good analytics or create multiple boards for your keywords.  Do this process every 3 months or so.

There’s a lot of advice, and strategy hacks out there

My concern is that people take them and run with them and it can hurt their analytics over time and then they’ll think, “What the heck is up with analytics”.  Just a simple reminder that you want to focus on what Pinterest tells us they want (Pinterest Best Practices) and combine that with your business goals.

If you are launching something, create fresh pins for it and pin those at the VERY beginning of your launch.  Then give Pinterest a few weeks to spread that information.  Just be sure that you use the same link on whatever you are launching and make that landing page (link) a WAIT LIST for the next round.

Also, look at what pins are getting the clicks and outbound clicks and create more similar to them.  The analytics tell you what’s working and what isn’t but remember to give it time.  Pinterest is a long game like blogging.

Mistakes that people make are to give up too soon.  Each month look at your analytics and adjust your strategy to what’s working and what’s not.

LAST TIP

Find an expert to help YOU create a strategy specifically for YOUR business and it’s goals so that you can hit the  ground running without wasting time with outdated or misinformation!

And if you are looking for JUST THAT, an expert to help YOU with your Pinterest marketing strategy – then friend, let’s chat !  I have three services available from a done-for-you service, done-with-you service, and a DIY service.  I’d love to help!!

How to Use Affiliate Links on Pinterest

How to Use Affiliate Links on Pinterest

If you prefer to watch rather than read, scroll to the bottom!

Are you interested in using affiliate marketing on Pinterest? Are you allowed to use affiliate links on Pinterest?

And what are the best practices you should follow to make sure you’re not breaking any laws or risk your account to the shutdown because you did something that goes against Pinterest’s terms and conditions?

I’ll be talking about all that and the three ways to pin them.

Happy You’re Here

Welcome back and if you’re new around here, I’m Jen Vazquez and I help female entrepreneurs go from overwhelm to an easy streamlined marketing strategy that includes Pinterest + repurposing content to grow their business with very little time.

Today we’re talking about using affiliate links on Pinterest.  Spoiler alert: You CAN use affiliate links on Pinterest BUT, you’ll need to be clear on the rules so you don’t get kicked off Pinterest or worse, break the law.

There’s a lot to get to, but first I’ll talk about the three ways you can pin affiliate links onto Pinterest for marketing.

We will not be using the spray and pray that stuff you throw up on Pinterest works.

What is an affiliate link?

An affiliate link is a unique hyperlink or other linking tools for referencing a person who is the affiliate for that company, product, or service.  Each time a person purchases via that link, you’ll get a stipend.   Amazon is one of the best-known affiliate links called Amazon Affiliate.

Another one is rewardStyle and LIKEtoKNOW.it.  As of right now (Feb 15, 2022), they are now known as one single global brand named LTK.

Also, Share-a-Sale which has a lot of brands that you can use affiliate links.

NOTE: In a bit, I’ll cover how to ensure you can use affiliate links on Pinterest.

Ways to Pin Affiliate Links

There are four ways you can use affiliate links.

The first is to go to the affiliate link and share that page directly to Pinterest.  The pin will pull the product image from that site.

The second is to create a Pinterest pin graphic about the product and when pinning to Pinterest, use the affiliate link.  It’s a much better experience for the buyer and when it’s a better experience, they are more likely to purchase.  The key to Pinterest is to know your business goals and match it to what Pinterest wants from us.  So when creating a pin graphic remember, you want to inspire people to take something that they saw on Pinterest and use it in their everyday life. It’s even better if you share a video about how you use it in every life.

The third is to create a blog about the product or a number of products. You can do a blog each month with your favorite things.  Or you can create a blog with your best finds on Amazon.  Then on your blog you have the affiliate links.

The more expensive a product is, the better off you are using the third way to pinning affiliate links by writing a blog.  It’s so much easier to explain why you love it and give way more information about it.  Less expensive or known brands do well just by linking to a pin.

Now to the fourth way.  It’s the newest way and is really driving a lot of success for myself and my clients.

Idea Pins and the ability to link an affiliate link.

Currently, to add an affiliate link to your Idea Pin, you must be on the mobile Pinterest app.

To create an Idea Pin on the mobile app, click on the “+” sign in the middle of the bar at the bottom of the page.

Then, under “Create,” select “Idea Pin.”

From there, create and design your Idea Pin!

Select the Idea Pin page that you want to add your affiliate product link to after creating the idea pin.

Add a product sticker

On the page, you want to add your affiliate link to, select the “Stickers” option in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

The “Pick a sticker” page will slide up. On this page, select the “product” sticker.

Add your affiliate link

You can now either add a product by searching for a pin that is already on Pinterest or the “Use a link” option.  This is what I do.

In the “Add a product link bar,” add the affiliate link of the product you wish to promote and click “search” on your keyboard.

Tip: It can take a bit for the link to populate.

Next, click the product, then click “Create” in the upper right-hand corner to add the link to the product tag.

Important: Be sure to keep the tab toggled on that marks your product tag as an affiliate link or sponsored link IF it is an affiliate link. It should look like this:

This will essentially be a disclaimer to viewers that you are promoting the product using an affiliate link.  Remember you want to be transparent on Pinterest.

You can also add an additional disclosure in text or a voice over your idea pin.

You can customize your affiliate link and text on Idea Pins by color.  I suggest using a color that stands out on the color you have for the pin.

This product tag contains your affiliate link, so when someone is viewing your Idea Pin and clicks on your product tag, it will take them to the product page using your affiliate link.

Here is a few examples that I quickly created:

Pinterest’s Policy

First is the Pinterest policy to make sure that we follow those guidelines so our account doesn’t get shut down or we get sued because we haven’t followed these rules.

In short, it says you are allowed to use affiliate marketing on Pinterest with some specific restrictions.

A few keys:  You’re not allowed to use shorteners or re directors. So what does tha mean?  you need to make it clear with the full link of the destination domain.  No hiding the affiliate partnership.

Pinterest always wants transparency and trust so that is key – that people know where they are going.

Also, it’s super important to NOT create affiliate pins repetitively or in large volumes, because this will trigger Pinterest spam policy and your account could be shut down.

You can read all of the rest of the policy HERE.

Summary!

Voila! You learned all about what affiliate links are, the four ways to use them, and the not-so sexy part of following the rules.

I hope you learned a lot and that you plan on trying affiliate links on Pinterest.  It’s just one more way to make money in your business.

The NOT Sexy Part of Affiliate Links

Now that you know HOW you can create affiliate links for Pinterest, now let’s chat about the not sexy part.

I’m speaking of affiliate guidelines and FTC guidelines.

Not all affiliate links are allowed on Pinterest.  The ones you can’t use on Pinterest, you can typically use those links on your website.

As business owners, we have to be thoughtful and follow the laws, terms, and policies so we don’t harm our business.

FTC Information

The Federal Trade Commision of FTC is very serious.  You want to know when someone is talking about a product they love if they are getting paid or not.  It makes a difference.  You need to disclose on all social media and your website if you are sharing an affiliate link.  Pinterest is the same. The FTC is recommending words like sponsored promotion, paid ads, or #ad which is really short and what I use. It must be in the description of the pin. Make sure it’s not just hidden in the middle of the pin description to make sure people actually see it. I typically put mine at the end.

REMINDER:  All of this can change, so make sure you check these every 3-6 months for any changes.

Last, you want to make sure that when you create affiliate pins for Pinterest, you comply with guidelines and regulations.

It’s really important right now that I mentioned you should keep track of all affiliate links, the date you signed up, the commission, the rules.

You also need to check the affiliate link sites rules for Pinterest.  Then you need to check Pinterest to confirm it’s o.k. to use them.

If not, you can still typically use them on a blog post and link the pin to your blog post instead of directly.

As an example for Rewardstyle (now called LTK), Pinterest allows those links.

Let’s Create Three Months of Blogs With These 5 Steps

Let’s Create Three Months of Blogs in these 5 Steps!

Welcome back, if you are familiar with my blog. If you are new here, I’m jen Vazquez a Marketing Strategist.

I help female entrepreneurs go from overwhelm to an easy streamlined marketing strategy that includes Pinterest + repurposing content to grow their business with very little time.

1| Determine Content Pillars or Buckets For Your Blog

When it comes to blogs, the question I hear the most is: What the heck do I even blog about?  This of course means what do I blog about that people want to read.

The best way to figure this out is to consider what your business focus is and what services/products you sell.  This will center around what your expertise is and what you feel confident about teaching. You should blog about things you are an expert at (and sell services for) and what your ideal client is searching for.

What you should blog about by Jen Vazquez Marketing Strategist
There are typically 3-5 different types of content which are often called content pillars or content buckets.

As an example for my coaching business it’s Pinterest Strategy, Marketing Strategy, Repurposing Content, and Keywords

If you are a wedding photographer, your pillars or content buckets are weddings, engagements, and wedding planning.  You aren’t a wedding planner, but you can talk about the steps that couples take when first planning a wedding. In their wedding process where they typically hire a wedding photographer like picking a venue, wedding dress shopping, picking a date, etc.

Just remember that the point of providing these free tips, advice, and resources on your blog goes to building that know, like, and trust process with a potential client.

2 | Brainstorm Topic Ideas For Each Category

For this brainstorming session, we are ignoring the wedding and engagement sessions that you blog.  But ensure you use the venue, city, county, etc. when writing that blog.

First, spend 20-30 minutes and just write out all the things you can think of that your ideal client is struggling with or is searching for.  Consider what your leads or current clients ask.

You can use these tools to consider what is being searched for the most:

The goal is to come up with 4 blogs for each content pillar or bucket, so you have a minimum of 12 blogs ideas.

3 | Research the titles that you have to make them better

The sweet spot for the best blog titles is to find a title that has a good search volume but low competition.

Also, consider if you are a service-based business locally to use multiple city/location keywords.  You can use the tools I mentioned above.

4 | Create a content calendar for the next three months

Identify which blogs you’ll use for which week.  Consider what you may be launching or for wedding pros where your clients are in the wedding planning process.

You can use software (asana, notion, Monday, Trello) or spreadsheet-like I offer.  The KEY is to ensure that you plan and schedule this content so you know what to do each week.

Bonus points for those that take a few days to write out the three months of blogs.  You can also take a day each month and write four blogs.  For that type of planning, definitely try different things to see which one works best for you.

Also consider your busy season and how much help it will be to not have to write blogs during that time if you do it ahead of time.

5 | Create 5-7 social media posts from each blog

If you do this, you’ll end up with a minimum of 15-20 social media posts for the quarter that you don’t have to come up with.

For the rest, consider Introductions, lead magnet invites, educational and inspirational posts.
