Although the day you get married may be the happiest of your life, the run-up to that day can prove oh so stressful! And sometimes it can be easy for that stress to overwhelm us. But, with the right approach, you can relax – and you might even enjoy the wedding planning process!
Here are some tips for taking the stress out of your planning.
Start with a list
Making a list is a great way to get all your priorities down on paper, from venue choice and date to whether you want dinner favors. There are even websites that have done the hard work for you, making sure you don’t miss anything out and breaking it down by month. This way you won’t wake up in the night worried you forgot to order the cake!
Set a budget
Once you know all the things you need to think about it’s time for the tough one. What is your budget? It’s tempting to throw caution to the wind and spend without thinking, but in the end, that’s going to cause you more stress. Having a budget helps you to rule choices out. Rather than agonizing over nine different types of bridesmaid dresses, for example, you’ll be able to relax.
Choose suppliers who fit your personality
Are you quirky or classic? Home belle or uptown girl? Do you know exactly what you want or are all ideas welcome? If you choose a supplier who doesn’t fit your personality, it’s hard to relax when planning a wedding. You will constantly worry that they won’t come through for you.
Take choosing a wedding band. If you know you want a group that will play requests, then don’t choose a group that wants to play their own music. The same goes for your photographer, your florist, your caterer. You can relax if your vision is in the right hands.
Make sure your other half is involved (or not!)
What’s the dynamic of your relationship? Are there jobs your partner would enjoy that you would hate? Sit down with them and work through the tasks, dividing them up so that the planning is shared out.
But be realistic. If your partner is not reliable, getting them involved will make planning less relaxing, not more! Instead, think about other people you could reach out to, like your maid of honor, your bridesmaids, or your family. You can also ask your suppliers for suggestions that can take the stress out of planning.
Schedule time for yourself
With everything to do, it’s easy to forget about what really matters. You are planning the first day of the rest of your life with the person you love! Taking time out to treat yourself with a spa treatment, a long walk, or simply a cup of herbal tea, is one of the best ways to refocus on what’s really important. Getting that sense of perspective might even be the best way to relax when planning a wedding.
