Wedding invitations include save-the-dates and the typical wedding invitations suite.  These take longer to get out than most couples realize.  Once you have the date and the venue, you’ll want to start on these.

First you have to create them.  If you are doing it yourself, depending upon your skill, it could take a while.  If you are having someone else do them, it can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks depending upon the detail of what you want done.

Then you have to print them.  Again, if you are doing them yourselves – mistakes can happen and ink runs out, so give yourself ample time in case something goes wrong.  If you have someone else print them it can take about a week or longer depending upon the detail and the mailing.  Additionally, if you are hiring someone to create them using calligraphy, you’ll need to allow for much more time.

Lastly, you’ll need to address and mail them.  If you are doing it yourself (and all the other wedding planning that happens), it can take awhile.  Also allow for mistakes and readdressing them.

Here is the timeline of when your guests should receive them:

  • Save-the-dates should go out 6-8 months prior to the wedding as they are intended to allow your wedding guests time to plan on their busy calendars and for them to secure travel and accomodations.
  • Wedding Invitations should go out 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding.  Keep in mind that if you don’t send save-the-dates and your guests may be coming from another state, you’ll want to move out the deadline by 1-2 months.

Bottom Line:  Start early!
